What motivated and inspired you to start your own business?
After losing my husband to gun violence on our first year wedding anniversary, it motivated me to become an author and write about my life. I used that to help others that might be going through similar experiences.
Tell us about your business.
I am an author, writing coach and publisher. I am the owner of Tanisha D. Mackin, LLC. I am also the owner of the Destiny Collection & The Destiny Collection Boutique. The Destiny Collection is a line of encouraging and inspiring stationery.

Where is your business based?
What were the first few steps you took to get your business up and running?
- Researched my market
- Wrote a business plan
- Made sure my branding was together
What has been the most effective way of raising awareness of your business and getting new customers?
For my publishing company, I receive new customers through word of mouth. I rarely advertise my publishing company. I care so much for my clients that they recommend other people to me.
What have been your biggest challenges so far?
My biggest challenge has been getting foot traffic into The Destiny Collection Boutique.
How did you overcome these challenges?
Consistency and continuously advertising.
How do you keep motivated through difficult times?
My children keep me motivated through hard times. They are the reason I continued going when my husband (their father) died.
How do you distinguish yourself from your competitors?
I am not money hungry, I do the things I do to help motivate and encourage others. I have a big heart and I love giving back and helping in any way possible.
What is the best advice you have received recently?
Mind your business and don’t focus on what others are doing with their business.
What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs?
Focus on your business and do not concern yourself with other businesses.

Google. I research everything.

What are you currently learning about for your business or looking for help with?
I am currently learning more about paper products and stationery products. I totally need an assistant lol.
What are your goals for the next few months and how are you striving to achieve them?
My goals are to continue to receive new clients and help publish their books, and more foot traffic and events held in my boutique.
