What is it that you look for in your hairstylist, makeup artist, or nail tech? Is it solely based on talent? Or does quality professional service and continued education play a part as well? It’s not always easy being an entrepreneur in the beauty industry. You have to manage your time and clients. You have to continue learning new things and stay up with the hottest trends.
If you are a business owner also, you want to make sure you have your businesses in order. Myself and a few other beauty industry entrepreneurs discussed what it takes to run a successful beauty business as well as service clients and these are the top 5 resources we came up with:
Online Booking
Whether you use StyleSeat, Booksy, or some other online booking app, these apps I mentioned are amazing and so very very convenient. They allow your clients to quickly and easily schedule an appointment and their desired service. As a stylist you can use them to communicate with your clients, balance your books, get commission reports as well as other great options.
Products
If you are a hairstylist, using the correct products are essential. I would recommend using a product line that carries a product to accommodate any person who comes to your salon. If you’re a makeup artist or nail tech, having every shade of foundation or nail polish, or being able to make the desired shade, is crucial to client retention and acquisition. Make sure you’re using products to keep the hair, skin and nails in its healthiest state.
Health Insurance
This one is very important. Being an independent contractor, you are running your own business – so you should operate like one. You need to make sure you are taking care of yourself. Your health should be a priority.
Exercise and eating a healthy meal
You are standing the majority of the time so you will need to have energy. Exercising gives you energy and keeps you in shape. Take a few extra minutes (maybe before you go in) to make sure you have a healthy alternative, I know the quick little fast food restaurant is right there and convenient but your body will thank you. You only get one, so take care of yourself!
Investments
Investments for your business and for your future are very important so working with a company like New York Life will help you to understand the important and necessary decisions needed to make in business as well as reach financial goals for both your business and personal life.
Whether you’re seasoned in the beauty industry or just starting out and are eager to operate a professional, successful beauty business, these resources should help give you that boost to get you started on the right track.
