Melissa Carter is owner of The Wholistic Package. Melissa is a certified Reiki level one and two practitioner, author, podcast host and mentor. She has a background in communications, fundraising and event planning. Melissa also works full-time in marketing in the construction industry. Read our interview with the lovely Melissa below…

What motivated and inspired you to start your own business?

I have always been passionate about helping others. I started receiving Reiki (pronounced ray-kee) approximately 5 years ago and it helped me, so I wanted to offer the option to other people. Reiki is a Japanese healing art, that helps balance our energy. I now offer Reiki to individuals, as well as corporate wellness programs. I’ve also always had a passion for writing; I began with a children’s book a couple years ago and I’m now working on a book for women in business. All of my writing has an inspirational and positive message.

Tell us about your business.

I am the owner of The Wholistic Package. In 2017, I re-shifted my business. I offer products and services to promote emotional and physical wellness as well as services to empower women. Services/products include Reiki, marketing for healthy vending machines, empowering books, inspirational apparel and a podcast for women in business.

Are you currently running any promos/contests/giveaways that you would like our readers to know about?

Where is your business based?

My business is based in Albany, NY, but most of my products/services can be accessed virtually.

What were the first few steps you took to get your business up and running?

The first few steps involved deciding what I wanted to name the business and what I wanted to offer. Then I applied for a DBA, at the time, and established a website, in addition to other marketing materials.

What has been the most effective way of raising awareness of your business and getting new customers?

I’m a promoter of networking, establishing relationships and utilizing your resources. I’ve attended many events to promote my business and tried to focus on marketing to people who would be interested in my products and services.

What have been your biggest challenges so far?

Social media marketing. I’m learning and growing each day!

How did you overcome these challenges?

By taking the time to research and evolve and learn what works. Also, by reaching out to others and utilizing my resources that have social media marketing experience.

How do you keep motivated through difficult times?

I remind myself that my passions are my purpose and I always think of WHY I started my business. There are a lot of successes and difficult times when you’re an entrepreneur, but the people who succeed are the ones that figure out solutions to their challenges and move forward.

How do you distinguish yourself from your competitors?

I never really focus on competition. Part of my business is women empowerment. I think helping other people shine makes you shine as well!

What is the best advice you have received recently?

When you’re authentic in what you do, it shows in your business. I relate to that because I am extremely authentic and my desire to help others shines through in my business.

What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs?

I have several quotes from my inspirational apparel. One says, “Success is not universal, success is defined by you.” This means that success has a different meaning for everyone. Whether your definition is monetary, inspiring someone, offering a product or service that improves people’s lives, define success on your own terms. Another is, “One step can make all the difference.” I always say that the only difference between myself and others is that I’m taking steps to accomplish my goals. There’s no magic answer, only hard work, dedication and taking the steps. Follow your passion, your purpose and your drive! Also, you can have it all, just not all at once. Things come in stages and it’s OK to enjoy things and experience things for awhile and move on to the next venture!

What is your favorite business tool or resource?

My favorite business tool would have to be my own background in marketing. The skills I have learned over the years have really been a great asset! I’ve connected with a lot of people through LinkedIn and social media networking groups as well. Women in my own community have been a great resource.

What social media outlets do you use? List them below.

What is a good article or book you have read recently?

I’m reading, “The Healthy Workplace,” by Leigh Stringer and it’s an amazing book!

What are you currently learning about for your business or looking for help with?

I’m learning more about podcasting and social media marketing.

What are your goals for the next few months and how are you striving to achieve them?

My goals are to schedule more podcasts and finish my business book for women. I strive to achieve, by setting weekly goals and deadlines for myself. I also strategize ways to network and connect with people.
