As you get on TikTok, it’s important to incorporate all the great features the app has to offer. Tik Tok has a lot of editing and video features, so navigating them can be tricky. Adding text to your videos allows your videos to be engaging and accessible to your audience. Here’s a breakdown of how to add text to your TikTok videos and the benefits it has.
The benefits
Adding text to your TikTok videos can be beneficial for a variety of reasons. Here are a few of the ways text can elevate your content.
1. Inclusivity
By adding text to your TikTok videos, you are making your content inclusive. Having the sounds transcribed not only helps those who have the volume off, but it also helps those with hearing conditions.
TikTok being an app that relies heavily on audio makes it harder for people with hearing impairments to participate on the platform. However, as more and more creators are adding text to their videos, it is becoming a more inclusive app for all.
Also through adding text into all your videos, those who need the text on videos will appreciate your efforts. This could lead to more likes, comments, and followers down the road, while also creating an inclusive space online.
2. More views
Adding text also has the power to grab the attention of viewers. The text allows users to easily follow along with your videos, providing context.
Also when viewers press on your profile and see text in your thumbnails, they are more likely to be intrigued by your posts on the for-you-page. If they see something that sounds interesting they’re likely to click onto it and watch the video, leading to more views and engagement. This can help grow your account as you gain more views and followers.
3. Narrate
The text on videos can help viewers follow along with your videos. The text can help you convey better what is occurring in your video. On social media, the simpler and easier to understand media the better.
For example, breaking down your video with captions like “Step 1” and a brief description can make your content easier to digest to your audience, increasing the likelihood that they’ll stick around for more.
How to add in text
Step 1: Upload video
Start by pressing the “+” button at the bottom center of your TikTok page. You then have to first film or upload a video, or open an existing draft.
After uploading or filming your button, edit and trim the video as you please. Then proceed by pressing the checkmark button at the bottom right of the screen.
Step 2: Type text
Now that you’ve successfully uploaded your video, press “Text” at the bottom left of your screen. Then use your keyboard to type your desired text into the video.
You’ll see there’s a variety of texts and colors to choose from. You can also adjust the size by pinching the text and move it across the video. When you’re happy with your text press done.
Step 3: Set duration
Next, you can press on your text and three options will pop up. These include:
- Text-to-speech
- Set duration
- Edit
“Text-to-speech” makes a voice read aloud the text you typed in. This might be helpful for a video that has no voice narration to it.
“Set duration” allows you to add the text during specified times of the video. After pressing this, it allows you to allocate the text to specific clips of the videos that appear in the bottom slider. Highlight the part where you want that clip to appear and press the checkmark to allow for momentary text. You can do this multiple times over your video, to have different text popping up throughout.
Step 4: Add captions
Captions are an easy new feature on TikTok that makes subtitles easy. By simply pressing the “Captions” button at the bottom left of your screen TikTok will convert any speaking it hears into a written caption. These captions pop up on your video and change as you speak.
Worried TikTik will misunderstand what you’re saying and write it wrong? Once the captions have loaded, the pen icon in the corner allows you to edit the text and make any changes you want.
After doing this press “Save”, and you can adjust the placement of the captions around the screen as you seem fit.
This wraps up any text you might want to include in your video, so make any other edits to your video before pressing “Next”. Here you can add a caption to your post before posting it online or making it a draft for later.
