Sabrina Atzori is an ambitious Toronto-based digital content creator with a passion for writing, communications, and social media. She is recognized for her innovation, perseverance, and bold personality. Sabrina pours her heart into everything she commits herself to and is determined to create the life she has always dreamed about.
1. What motivated and inspired you to start your own business?
COLOURED by The Copper Blonde was created to fuel Sabrina’s inner child, as colouring was one of her favourite care-free activities to do growing up. For this reason, she decided to create custom crayon sets that can be used for any and every occasion. With these crayons, Sabrina hopes that every child can have a little more colour brought to their world!
2. Tell us about your business.
Using silicone baking molds and melted Crayola crayons, COLOURED by The Copper Blonde creates unique, personalized, and shareable custom crayons. Crayons can be created in either solid colours or a combination of 2-4 colours to create a nifty marble effect and fall into the following four categories: Name/Initials, Seasonal (Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter Themed), Holiday/Special Event (Valentine’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, Birthday, Etc.), and Miscellaneous (Animal, Food, Sports Themed, Etc.).
3. Where is your business based?
COLOURED by The Copper Blonde is based in Toronto, Ontario (North Etobicoke specifically) and solely offers curbside pick-up at this current time.
4. What were the first few steps you took to get your business up and running?
To ensure a successful business launch, Sabrina took the time to carefully curate the aesthetic of COLOURED by The Copper Blonde. This included narrowing down an appropriate business name (which ties into her own personal brand ‘The Copper Blonde’), designing a logo, selecting a colour palette, printing business cards and flyers, and creating the brand’s main two social media pages. The steps that later followed included determining a process for payment and local pick-up, and purchasing the required materials necessary to start the business.
5. What has been the most effective way of raising awareness of your business and getting new customers?
Creating well-developed content for social media pages such as Facebook and Instagram and being active on these channels has been an effective way of raising brand awareness and of course, word of mouth, which tends to go a long way! Having a consistent brand identity as well is also beneficial.
6. What have been your biggest challenges so far?
One of the biggest challenges COLOURED by The Copper Blonde initially faced was the cooling process of crayons post baking. It might sound silly, but trial and error were needed! Another challenge was determining the most effective way of removing crayon wrappers and cutting crayons into tiny pieces.
7. How did you overcome these challenges?
At first, Sabrina found crayons were cracking when removing them from their silicone molds and the traditional method of removing crayon wrappers was not working the way she liked. She also encountered challenges when cutting crayons. Sabrina then found methods that would ensure easy crayon making from start to finish and has been incorporating these methods into her creations ever since!
8. What is the best advice you have received recently?
It’s better to have tried and failed than to have never tried at all.
9. What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs?
If you do everything with passion and purpose, you have already succeeded. And remember: the only limits you have are the limits you believe. You are more than capable of achieving your goals. These pieces of advice can be applicable to both entrepreneurship and life as a whole.
10. What are you currently learning about for your business or looking for help with?
COLOURED by The Copper Blonde is still learning about innovative ways to create new designs and bring forth various offerings. And of course, Sabrina is always looking for new approaches to reach and engage with the brand’s target audience, while finding ways to incorporate custom crayons into not only the lives of children, but also adults.
11. What are your goals for the next few months and how are you striving to achieve them?
Sabrina will be attending her first networking event for female entrepreneurs at the beginning of March and at the end of March, COLOURED by The Copper Blonde will be showcased at its first market event for small businesses as a local vendor. The main objective for these next couple of months and at these events is to engage and connect with fellow small business owners and to raise personal brand awareness.
12. What is your favorite business tool or resource?
COLOURED by The Copper Blonde’s favourite business tools are Canva, Adobe Illustrator, and Vistaprint, which have been used to both bring branding to life and create digital printable files such as custom colouring sheets and word searches. A favourite online resource is currently Amazon, where many silicone molds are purchased, along with bulk packaging and Crayola crayon packs in multiple shades.
