What motivated and inspired you to start your own business?
Starting a business had been a dream of mine for quite some time. I thought about starting one immediately after graduating college, but I knew I needed more experience. I took on a couple of full-time jobs and I couldn’t imagine myself working a 9-to-5 for the rest of my life. It just didn’t seem exciting or challenging enough for me and I knew I was capable of doing so much more than the work I was given at those jobs. In 2013, I was approached to help out a freelance designer with projects. I really looked up to her for being such a great designer and for her work ethic. She was my biggest inspiration and when I finally decided to branch out on my own, she was one of my biggest supporters.
Tell us about your business.
NMR Designs is a design agency specializing in identity & branding, corporate communications, creative copywriting, packaging design, digital work including website design, email marketing, and social media and print design including infographics, fact sheets, brochures and more. We are based in Columbia, Maryland but serve many clients across the US.
What were the first few steps you took to get your business up and running?
First and foremost, I had to establish the NMR Designs brand. I also established a network of other professionals which I think is very important when you’re an entrepreneur, and lastly, I invested in the equipment and tools I needed for work.
What has been the most effective way of raising awareness of your business and getting new customers?
Word of mouth. Always do good work so that you have a great reputation to back you up.
What have been your biggest challenges so far?
Time management. It seems like there’s so much to do and not enough hours in the day.
How did you overcome these challenges?
This is still something I am still working on as some days require long hours. But I’ve learned the importance of finding balance in all aspects of your life.
How do you keep motivated through difficult times?
I have such a great support system that lifts me up when times are rough. It’s so important to surround yourself with positive people. I also meditate which helps to clear my thoughts and recharge my mind so that I can take on challenges.
How did you distinguish yourself from your competitors?
I go above and beyond with all of my projects to provide high-quality work. I am a perfectionist so I have high standards for the work I deliver. Even if the budget is all used up, I’ll put in extra time to ensure my clients are receiving my best work.
What is the best advice you have received recently?
Don’t do anything that does not fill your heart with happiness.
What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs?
Sometimes it will be tough, but it’s very important to remember why you started and to always stay grounded.
What is your favorite business tool or resource?
Asana. I use this for project management and I love that it syncs with my phone. And more importantly, it’s FREE.
