Maria is a blogger and business owner at Do Better Everyday. She is enjoying the journey that God has blessed her with.
1. When did you start blogging?
I started blogging in 2017. This started off on WordPress and was essentially me sharing some of the things that I was learning with my immediate community.
My blogging community then started to grow and started to form into a brand and clothing line.
2. Why did you start your blog?
I started my blog because I started to discover that I loved to encourage others and also share what I was learning on my journey. It started off with me writing notes to myself and using these to encourage myself. I am all about learning and growing and as I grow I love to encourage others to grow also.
For me, at the time writing was the perfect way for me to do this. It was a step of faith but I am so grateful that I took this bold step as it has opened the door to many opportunities and is also the beginning of what is today my business, DBE UK.
3. What topics do you blog about?
I blog about faith, lifestyle, and personal development, hence my blog being called “Do Better Every Day.” As mentioned above, I am passionate about the growth and this is reflected in my blog.
I talk about mental health, physical health, finances, and relationships all from the perspective of the Christian faith.
These are my experiences and things that I have learned rather than professional advice.
4. What specific steps did you take to launch your blog?
When the idea first came, the first step was to decide which platform to use for my blog. I did a bit of research on different platforms and also looked at what platform bloggers around me were using. Then I decided after some research that WordPress was the best platform for me.
I signed up for WordPress and decided to go for their free plan. Next I had to decide on the name of the blog.
Alongside completing these important formalities, I also had to do other things such as pray to God about this idea and seek His direction. I also did not tell anyone about my blog until It was officially launched.
5. How do you combine your faith with your blog?
This is a huge one for me and it is something I have been growing and adapting to throughout this journey. My faith is a big part of my blog because most of the things I speak about are from a faith perspective.
Looking back at the blog posts I have released, I can see how my faith has grown and developed in this time, and I can also see the times when my faith was struggling. As my faith is a big part of this brand and a big part of who I am, I have not found it too difficult to combine.
6. How do you get traffic to your blog?
Initially, my main way of getting traffic to my blog was through those around me, whether that was my contacts on WhatsApp, my Instagram, or my Twitter. I would then encourage them to sign up to my email subscription list so that they are notified when I upload a new blog post.
Although I still use these social media platforms to share my blog, I now try to focus on other ways to expand the reach of my blog.
One way I do that at the moment is through sharing my blog with blogger platforms, such as BlackBritishBloggers, who then re-share my blog to people I would not usually reach.
7. What has been challenging about blogging?
The most challenging thing has been finding the strength to blog when going through things in life or when dealing with writer’s block. Not being too hard on myself and understanding that sometimes life happens has made it easier to get through challenging times.
Also understanding that during some seasons, other things may take more priority, and that is ok.
8. How has faith played a part in your growth?
As I have grown in my faith, this has meant that I am able to be more fruitful through my blog, and for me that is growth. Also, staying consistent alongside faith has also played a part.
9. What is your favorite scripture?
Matthew 5:14-16 – “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
