Malia Anderson left corporate america to pursue her dreams as a fashion stylist. Read our interview with the lovely Malia below…
What motivated and inspired you to start your own business?
I started my own business because I realized Corporate America was no longer for me. I had passion, drive and skill and wanted very much to be a success on my own terms as a fashion stylist.
Tell us about your business.
Style by Malia is a full-service wardrobe styling firm. We work with men and women to help them define and implement their personal style. We also work with clients on their brand image and marketing. Style by Malia also designs, produces and direct fashion shows, photoshoots and video shoots.
What were the first few steps you took to get your business up and running?
My business began when I started giving people my opinion. I started a blog about celebrity style, and then started answer the questions of people who followed me on social media. Style by Malia grew from there.
What has been the most effective way of raising awareness of your business and getting new customers?
I think the most effective way of raising awareness about your business, is actually doing a good job. I’m lucky because word-of-mouth has been by far the best advertising for my business and recruitment tool for new clients.
What have been your biggest challenges so far?
Self doubt, I think self doubt often holds me back. I often set a goal and achieve it twice just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke. I could likely build and approve on my business faster if I gave myself more room for success and took more risks.
How did you overcome these challenges?
It’s all about hard work. I talk to my mentors and push myself to succeed.
How do you keep motivated through difficult times?
For me, personally, I pray. I also lean on my family and my tribe. I know I am capable of winning, but having people in my corner help me when I’m down. God is a huge part of my life, and I like to think he is on my side.
How did you distinguish yourself from your competitors?
I believe I distinguish myself from competitors because I conduct my business on a personal level. I work with clients individually and build relationships. My clients are never put in a box, I tailor my services to them. I also embrace technology and social media in my business, so my clients and potential customers have more ways to connect with me.
What is the best advice you have received recently?
The best advice I have received lately is “never stop striving for what you deserve”. I think it helps me push myself further to achieve my goals. Someone told me, “You decide what kind of company you want to run. That is why you own it.” I think that has helped me, to continue to refine Style by Malia and make sure it expresses my goals.
What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs?
I would advise other entrepreneurs to “never treat your business like a hobby”. If you treat your business like a hobby, no one will ever take it seriously, because you aren’t. Also, never be afraid to ask for help.
What is your favorite business tool or resource?
My favorite business tool is a pen and paper. I know it’s old school but I take a lot of notes, and try and write it all down.

What are your goals for the next few months and how are you striving to achieve them?
I’m hoping to grow my business on all fronts, as well as expand my body positive speaking career. We are hiring another employee onto my team in the position of associate stylist this fall. I am also half-way through writing my first book and speaking throughout Northern California about what means to love your body.
