Karina Becker Broke Through A “Mans Industry” And Has Established Herself for 20 Years

Karina Becker was born in Russia and raised in Poland. 25 years ago, she came to the United States, where she has cultivated and grown a thriving business (currently 20 employees). Read our interview with the lovely Karina below…

What motivated and inspired you to start your own business?

I’ve always had a free spirit. It’s innate for me to want to do something different than everyone else. I started working with a big company in the stone industry and learned everything about stone, then decided to use my knowledge to “do it my way”.

Tell us about your business.

I fabricate natural stone for residential and commercial projects in the Chicago area. I work with builders and designers on construction projects. The stone is fabricated for kitchen counter tops, bathroom vanities, fire places, bars, restaurants, etc…

List awards/certifications/accomplishments.

20 years in business in Chicago area. As for accomplishments, I’m a woman who faces challenges every day in the construction industry. I’ve earned the respect in the construction business through knowledge and hard work.

Where is your business based?

Chicago, Illinois.

What were the first few steps you took to get your business up and running?

I took a risk. I left a cozy job to start my company and establish my own future.

What has been the most effective way of raising awareness of your business and getting new customers?

The biggest has been word of mouth. For me it’s all about customer care and a willingness to provide the best.

What have been your biggest challenges so far?

Being a woman in a vastly populated MAN line of work.

How did you overcome these challenges?

I’ve decided to speak out when I know I am right.

How do you keep motivated through difficult times?

I love what I do.

How do you distinguish yourself from your competitors?

I am not driven only by $$$.

What is the best advice you have received recently?

I believe the key to any success is to make sure you’re passionate about what you do.
