1. More emphasis on micro-influencers and nano-influencers
Micro-influencers and nano-influencers will become used much more in influencer marketing over mega-influencers.
- NANO INFLUENCERS have anywhere from 1K-9K followers, but their audience is usually 100% authentic.
- MICRO INFLUENCERS have anywhere from 10K-99K followers, they cost more than nano influencers, but aren’t always more effective. However, it varies from person to person.
- MEGA INFLUENCERS will be used a lot less because of the cost and the amount of potential fake followers and engagement.
2. Instagram will remain a key influencer marketing channel
Instagram is currently the leading platform for influencer marketing and it will continue to be in 2020. Instagram is receiving massive growth year by year and it’s only going to go up from here!
A key makeup brand, Morphe Brushes, has seen an insane amount of growth through the years now at 7.5 million Instagram followers.
Morphe Brushes started as an online makeup company and through the use of YouTube personalities and Instagram influencers, they’ve seen a massive growth in both followers as well as income.
Micro influencer @elainerau has seen a massive surge in her influencer income because she decided to focus on Instagram and dedicated both time and money in learning how to create content that attracts brands AND loyal followers.
3. The emergence of fake sponsored content
A growing amount of Instagram users are trying to become influencers due to the amount of attention and money that influencers can receive.
Some users want to fool brands to make it seem like they have a large following base and will actually purchase followers online. It seems like this will continue especially with the large number of influencers that will emerge in 2020.
4. Brands will have long-term relationships with influencers
Finding influencers can actually be pretty difficult for a brand. There’s a lot of things that they need to keep in mind: an influencer’s reputation, the brands they’ve worked with, how many followers they have, etc.
So, when a brand finds an influencer that really works for their brand, it makes it easier if the influencer is willing on continuing a long-term relationship with the brand.
This will emerge in 2020 especially with the increase in influencers. Brands will want to continue relationships with influencers who they know are committed to them because of the difficulty in finding the perfect influencer.

5. The number of influencers will increase
The generation that was born using social media is now hitting an age where they are able to buy things for themselves through apps.
Therefore brands will receive more engagement from Instagram users – this means that there will be an increase in users as well as an increase in the users who want to become influencers.

Recently, the FTC has prepared a set of rules for influencers. Most influencers will now caption “#ad” on their sponsored Instagram posts, and this is going to become the norm in 2020.
It’s been said that the current generation is not a fan of traditional advertisements, but are more likely to respond to advertisements from influencers on Instagram who they trust to recommend products.
Example below: brand collaboration with HealthyLine with the correct FTC disclosures.
7. Brands will prove monetary success in response to influencer marketing
Because of the increased budget in influencer marketing, brands will be expected to prove monetary success with influencer marketing to their marketing managers.
This shouldn’t be difficult due to the increase in statistical apps and tracking methods on each social media platform which is perfect for brands looking to prove that they’re receiving an increase in income due to their influencer marketing efforts.
8. Video content will grow
Video on Instagram especially will grow in 2020. It’s expected that YouTube will grow as well as the video features on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. The video content on these apps is relatively new from 2018, and with the new smartphones with faster connection, the content will only continue to grow.
Videos are also much more fun for an audience to watch in comparison to still photos. Influencers have recently been much more likely to add videos into their social media routine.
9. More focus on storytelling
Campaigns receive the most attention when influencers tell stories with products.
For example, if your brand is ProActiv, you should find an influencer who used to have trouble with acne so they’re able to tell a story about how ProActiv has changed their life. (Kendall Jenner)
If you’re an influencer, make sure you actually believe in the products you’re promoting. For example, @elainerau has been using menstrual cups for over a decade now because she believes that she is helping the world reduce waste by not using tampons and pads every month.

Throughout 2020, influencer marketing is here to stay. It reaches a bigger audience and seems more authentic to an audience.
