Nothing is perfect in life. There are little imperfections and flaws everywhere. Often these imperfections are things only we notice and are bothered by. But those little imperfections, even if they don’t affect our lives in a big way and no one else has noticed them, can hold us back. Whether it’s because we know we’re not perfect, because it knocks our confidence, or because it’s distracting, imperfections can feel heavy at times. Sometimes we want to know how to deal with our imperfections and our emotions about them to put our lives back on track. You can learn to deal with your imperfections healthily and productively. With that in mind, here are some ideas about how to deal with imperfections.
1. See an expert
Imperfections are important, but if your imperfection is negatively impacting your life and confidence it might be time for a change. If the imperfection is bothersome and something that an expert can fix, then it might be worth speaking to someone about it.
An example could be if you have a gap between tooth and gum and you don’t like it. It leaves you feeling conscious and prevents you from truly smiling. In that case, seeking expert advice could be the ideal solution, and you can then deal with the issue and get straight, healthy teeth. This is just one example, and there are many more.
The key is to do what you want to do for yourself. A gap in your teeth might be something you’re bothered by, whereas someone else might celebrate it. But if it’s worrying you and causing you problems, no matter how small those problems might be, expert help is always a good idea.
2. Find the positive
To accept your flaws, you have to change how you think about yourself. Stop thinking you’re not good enough or lacking in some ways, and start seeing yourself as a whole, flawed person.
Also, if you think about it, you might realize that your flaws or mistakes give you a unique edge. The traits that make you feel different, others likely desire as they make you unique.
If the imperfections you see in yourself are your past failures, use these as a learning lesson. Every regret and mistake helps to shape you into a better version of yourself.
Learning to see your flaws as your strengths can take time, but if you work on self-validation, you’ll be able to see yourself in a better light. Try exploring online resources and successful blogs about self-love and mental health to help your self-esteem.
3. Realize your imperfections are human
Your flaws make you real and give you character. When you find yourself getting swayed by a picture of a well-put-together and efficient person, try to picture that person in your everyday life. You might be surprised to find out that their perfection could start to bother or bore you in no time.
Something you view as an imperfection in yourself is likely a unique characteristic that people value about you. It makes you interesting and sets you apart. Learn to celebrate and become confident about your uniqueness.
In fact, you may have no idea that the things you think of as flaws make other people feel like you are a whole person. By practicing self-acceptance, you can accept your flaws and let go of the need to meet the unrealistic standards you set for yourself. This frees you to live a meaningful life.
4. Be around positive people
People we spend time with and talk to can affect how we think and what decisions we make. Because of this, it’s best to hang out with positive people who accept us for who we are, flaws and all.
Surround yourself with friends and family who celebrate your uniqueness. Also, chances are the thing you are so insecure about isn’t noticeable or negative to those around you.
Has a friend ever shared a secret insecurity with you and you’ve been surprised, as this was something you admired about your friend? Chances are your friends value you and your traits in a similar way.
If a friend makse you feel shame about any differences, reevaluate the friendship. Instead of being around people who want to tear you down, seek people who make you feel valued and confident.
