What motivated and inspired you to start your own business?
I have been self employed for 10 years and that’s far too long a story to share here! But what motivated me to set up Find Your Inner Unicorn, which is an addition to my corporate business, is that I wanted to share the material of the course as widely as possible, as it’s gold-dust! It also enables me to live in my purpose and values and that for me is the route to fulfilment and a deep sense of connection with my place in the world.
Tell us about your business.
Find Your inner Unicorn is a supportive and creative space in which to explore who you are and who you want to become through the power of values, your unique purpose and legacy to create powerful intentions to take back into the world. It’s a two day retreat during which go on a deep-dive exploration of our values and beliefs, exploring how these can both serve as an accelerator and a brake in our lives and careers. You will learn simple, practical and powerful tools and techniques to create the opportunity to let go of whatever may be holding you back. This allows us to move into a creative space to discover or define our purpose, what we are drawn to be and do in our personal and professional lives. That’s really what this is about, finding the source of energy and motivation that means we do what we love and love what we do, fully able to express freedom of being in our lives and work, in a practical, straightforward way.
Where is your business based?
In Manchester in the UK, but we’ll work anywhere where there are a group of people who would like to experience what we offer.
What were the first few steps you took to get your business up and running?
This could be a long story, but in practical terms, it was about testing out the format with a group of existing colleagues and clients, and once it was established that it worked, that people liked it, building a website and taking it from there.
What has been the most effective way of raising awareness of your business and getting new customers?
It’s always word of mouth. It’s such a profound and deep experience that once people come and then start talking to others about it, the word spreads. For this reason, I had some video testimonials professionally filmed and uploaded to the website so that those who are thinking about coming can see and hear from previous participants in person.
What have been your biggest challenges so far?
This isn’t my only business or work, so juggling this against time factors for projects with corporate clients and fitting in a consistent approach to social media is an ongoing challenge.
How did you overcome these challenges?
I haven’t really and I’m happy to be honest about that! It’s something I love to do, so I have decided I don’t want “making it work” to become something that feels like a burden or additional pressure. So I do what I can when I can and I’m happy with that.
How do you keep motivated through difficult times?
I’m living in purpose and values, so motivation really isn’t an issue. This is who I am and what I’m here for, so it’s very natural for me. Having said that, I take a lot on and I get tired so learning how to balance enough rest and time for other stuff with work is ongoing for me.
How did you distinguish yourself from your competitors?
I don’t worry about this at all. I have a mindset of abundance, there is more than enough out there for all of us and those who are drawn to work with me will work with me and those who aren’t, won’t.
What is the best advice you have received recently?
I’m not on much for advice, I believe we are all innately capable of fulfilling our own aspirations and it works best when we find our own way. Some practical tips can be helpful, so I use other’s expertise when I need it. For example, I have no desire to become an expert in accounts or social media or IT, so I get help for those things, leaving me free to do what I love and do best, which is illuminate the way for those who seek their freedom.
What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs?
Find your purpose and start from there.
